LIFE-Food.Waste.Standup in Malta

The Malta Food Bank Foundation (MFBF), as partner of Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus and in collaboration with FEBA in the dissemination tour on food waste, hosted a Conference in Malta.

This conference was organized as part of the three year LIFE-Food.Waste.StandUp project, which deals with the issues of prevention and reduction of food waste. The goal is to raise awareness among all stakeholders of the food supply chain in order to increase the recovery and redistribution of surplus food.

The attendees of the conference were the main stakeholders such as retailers, suppliers, food production companies and our partners - NGOs to whom MFBF distribute food that was recovered.

Irene Schembri, Chairperson of MFBF, welcomed the participants and chaired the conference. Angela Frigo, Secretary General of the European Food Banks Federation, presented the mission and way of working of the organization. Vincenzo Palumbo, Project Manager at the Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus, made a first presentation about awareness raising campaign for food waste prevention and surplus food management among Agro-Food companies, SMEs, retailers and consumers, and then a second presentation on the structure, mission and functioning of the Italian Food Bank. Domenico Messina, Director at Banco Alimentare Sicilia, contributed to the discussion with a concrete overview of the daily activity of a Food Bank, sharing expertise and good practices. This was followed by a presentation given by Ronald Camilleri (Deputy Chair – MFBF) who spoke about the setup of the Malta Food Bank Foundation, its mission and function. The last presentation was delivered by Dr-Ing Clyde Falzon Bouvett on food waste collection in the Maltese Islands.

The conference was an opportunity to meet more NGOs, retailers and consumers, most of whom participated in the discussion during the Q&A. The interaction that followed through questions addressed to the panelists and the interest shown in MFBF’s work was very encouraging.

Overall it was a well-attended and successful event, an event which also attracted the media’s attention who were present and who interviewed Irene Schembri. Her interview was aired by PBS TV news that same evening. Following this Irene Schembri was also invited on the same topic as a guest to a popular program which this time was aired on the National Radio Station.
