The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is monitoring the situation regarding the outbreak of COVID-19 and affirms that there is currently no evidence that food is a likely source or route of transmission of the virus.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) explained that animals in China were probably the source of the initial infection, but the virus is now spreading from person to person. There have not been any reports of transmission through food. This is why EFSA is not currently involved in the response to the COVID-19 outbreaks.
Even though, a couple of recommendations should be followed as regards food safety (e.g. good hygiene practices during food handling and preparation such as washing hands, cooking meat thoroughly and avoiding potential cross-contamination between cooked and uncooked foods).
