Waitrose teams up with FareShare to redirect surplus farm food to families in need

 18-05-2021

From 1 March, Waitrose is providing funds to FareShare to contribute to the distribution of surplus food from its farms, taking away all handling costs from farmers and helping them to maximise the number of donations they can make.

In total, five million surplus apples, crooked carrots, mushrooms and sweet baby sprouts will be redistributed, aiming to create more than one million meals for vulnerable families across the UK.

In addition, as surpluses from protein food types are low but needed, Waitrose will provide FareShare with one million British eggs and almost 22 tonnes of British beef.

Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare, comments: “This is a significant moment in our battle against food waste and hunger in the UK. Working with Waitrose farms and suppliers offers FareShare a fantastic opportunity to access food that would otherwise end up going to waste, at a time when millions of people are going hungry across the UK.”
