National food appeal to help Food Banks cope with the rising demand for food

Demand for Food Banks is rising in Ireland. Research carried out among 121 of FoodCloud’s charity partners identified a 70 % increase in demand for food as a result of Covid-19.

Between March and June, FoodCloud distributed 968 tonnes of food, equating to 2.3 million meals, through retail partners and FoodCloud’s three hubs.

Four of Ireland’s largest retailers, Tesco, Aldi, Lidl and Eurospar unveiled a new food initiative by FoodCloud called “Food For Ireland”: from 17 to 20 September, shoppers will be able to donate non-perishable food in over 400 stores. The goal is to obtain 280,000 meals which is the immediate need.

“This initiative shows how business can be at the forefront of leading social change providing a lifeline to those who need food the most” said FoodCloud chief executive Iseult Ward.
