Food redistribution in European countries: what hurdles and drivers?

The skill-sharing session “Hurdles and drivers for food redistribution in European countries” was organized by the European Food Banks Federation on 22 April 2021 and took place virtually.

35 Food Bank representatives from 18 countries (Albania, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain and UK) registered to the session.

Food donation is a beneficial solution to prevent food waste and reduce food insecurity: it is a business friendly, environmentally sensitive, and socially responsible alternative. Food donation is the best destination when surplus food occurs because it ensures the highest value use of edible food resources for human consumption.

In the first part of the session the participants brainstormed about this theme, trying to identify the main obstacles and drivers in the countries in which they operate.

Furthermore, the Food Bankers had the pleasure to benefit from the participation of Mr. José Luis De Felipe Gardón, Senior Expert at DG Health and Food Safety of the European Commission. Thanks to his presentation, the participants had the opportunity to better understand the progress made with respect to food donation at EU level.

Finally, the second part of the session was devoted to questions, comments and contributions from Food Bank representatives.
