A Society is Only as Strong as the People It Protects: Closing the Gap in Crisis Preparedness in Denmark

“If we do not plan for the most vulnerable citizens, we risk a crisis that will hit socially unevenly.” – Lea Gry von Cotta-Schønberg, Director at FødevareBanken

FødevareBanken, with support from Østifterne, a Danish philanthropic foundation that supports and funds efforts to build a safer and more sustainable society, is launching the first phase of a national initiative to strengthen food preparedness for socially and economically vulnerable citizens in Denmark.

The initiative addresses a gap in current crisis preparedness: many vulnerable people do not have the financial means or opportunity to maintain the nationally recommended level of household emergency supplies. During unexpected situations, this creates uneven resilience and increasing food insecurity among different parts of society.

Building the Societal Safety Net for Food Security

The project aims to map all social organisations that may need support in their operations during crises, and develop flexible logistics, distribution routes and volunteer networks that can be activated during emergencies, such as prolonged supply disruptions.

The initiative builds on FødevareBanken’s existing partnerships with more than 200 food companies and 487 social organisations across Denmark, while strengthening collaboration between volunteers, businesses, foundations and public authorities.

The long-term goal is to integrate the FødevareBanken network into Denmark’s national preparedness plan, helping to ensure that the most vulnerable are not left behind when crisis strikes.
