On June 24, FEBA and the Irish member FoodCloud hosted the session “The Donation Equation” at the Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. The session took place during the Food Future Ideas Fest, a lively event showcasing the best ideas and innovations behind our food future through dynamic discussions, innovative spaces, and unique workshop experiences from food and drink thought leaders. This dynamic workshop explored how food recovery can be accelerated through stronger collaboration between policy, technology, and industry, highlighting practical solutions to transform surplus food into meaningful social and environmental impact across Europe.
During the discussion, FEBA’s Senior Policy Manager emphasised that food waste is a pressing socioeconomic issue, calling for coordinated agricultural and social policies to support food banks as living costs rise. Georgia, representative from FoodCloud, highlighted innovation and digital tools as essential for safely connecting surplus food with charities, noting that even small, properly coordinated donations drive massive value. Supporting this, FEBA’s Head of Fundraising stressed the shared role in building efficient systems to bridge the gap between rising surplus and rising need. Beyond redistribution, FEBA’s network continues to provide critical legal guidance, helping partners safely navigate existing frameworks to maximise food recovery.
