Greek Food Bank Celebrates 30 Years of Fighting Food Waste and Food Insecurity

FEBA warmly congratulates the Greek Food Bank on its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of impactful work in reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity across Greece.

The celebration took place at the Benaki Museum in Athens, gathering partners, supporters, and friends of the Food Bank. The event highlighted the impressive social and environmental impact of the organisation, with findings presented from studies by Mr Konstadinos Abeliotis of Harokopio University of Athens and HIGGS.

According to the research, for every €1,000 in operating costs, the Greek Food Bank redistributes 5,500 kilograms of food, generating over €5,000 in social value. Additionally, its operations help prevent the waste of water equivalent to 6.5 Olympic-sized swimming pools and reduce air pollutants equal to 152,000 kilometres driven by a typical petrol-powered car.

The event was honoured by the presence of the Minister of Social Cohesion and Family, Domna Michaelidou; the Deputy Regional Governor, Christina Kefalogianni; the Director General of ΣΕΒΤ (Hellenic Food Industries Association), Vasso Papadimitriou; and FEBA’s CEO,  Esteban Arriaga Miranda.

FEBA is proud to have the Greek Food Bank as a member of our network and looks forward to continuing our shared mission for years to come.
