Theory of Change
Discover how we fight hunger, reduce waste, and make a difference across Europe.
Problem
In the EU, 33 million people are unable to afford a quality meal every second day. At the same time, 59 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in the EU (~11 kg per person/month).
In the EU, 93.3 million people (21%) are at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
Unsustainable food systems contribute significantly to carbon emissions and environmental degradation.
Approach
FEBA strengthens the food bank network through efficient coordination and by facilitating collaboration among its 30 national members.
FEBA empowers its members to thrive independently by enhancing their impact through collaboration, training, and shared knowledge.
FEBA is strengthening data and indicators to support members, guide CSR partnerships, and drive national advocacy.
FEBA works with stakeholders to elevate food banks through advocacy, collaboration, and public engagement.
FEBA builds strategic alliances with stakeholders, including CSR-aligned private sector and civil society.
FEBA promotes sustainable practices to reduce food waste and environmental harm.
Impact
In 2024, approximately 834,000 tonnes of food were redistributed to 12.2 million beneficiaries through 43,345 charitable organisations providing assistance to vulnerable communities.
FEBA members redirect surplus food from landfills to people in need—tens of thousands of tonnes saved annually.
Redistributing food avoids the emissions linked to production, transport, and decomposition of wasted food (e.g., 10,698 tCO₂e avoided in the UK alone).
Food banks are at the heart of a circular and sustainable food model, transforming waste into value and reinforcing EU climate and food strategies.
FEBA impact aligns with SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 12.3: Halving food waste per capita by 2030.
