In Romania, the Federation of Food Banks, together with its founding partner Lidl Romania, is marking an important milestone in the development of its mission to fight food waste and support vulnerable communities.
Between 1 and 21 December 2025, Lidl Romania organised a nationwide solidarity campaign in which every kilogram of oranges purchased by customers contributed directly to building the first warehouse owned by the Food Banks in Romania. Through the involvement and generosity of Lidl customers across the country, the initiative raised 3,000,000 RON (about €589,000 EUR), fully dedicated to this project. The warehouse will be built in the commune of Cordun, Neamț County, and it will become a space where the care of food is transformed into care for people. There, food saved from waste will be received, sorted, and managed responsibly before reaching partner non-governmental organisations that run social programs for people in vulnerable situations.
For the Federation, this warehouse represents more than infrastructure: As the first facility of its own, it is a meaningful step that supports the organisation’s ability to carry out its mission with continuity, responsibility, and closeness to those who need support, while contributing to the collective effort of reducing food waste.
Launched during the holiday season, the initiative transformed a simple everyday choice into a gesture of solidarity. By choosing oranges for their families, Lidl customers also contributed to a long-term project that will continue to support people in need with care, responsibility, and dignity.
