FEBA recently conducted an assessment visit to its member in Moldova, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the development and strengthening of food banks across Europe. The visit was led by our Project Manager, Sofiia Vara, who met with the Food Bank team to evaluate operations and explore opportunities for further collaboration.

The Moldovan Food Bank has been playing a vital role in the fight against food insecurity by recovering surplus food and redistributing it to people in need. Moldova faces particular challenges due to economic constraints and the pressures of hosting displaced populations in recent years. In this context, the Food Bank’s mission is more crucial than ever.

During the visit, discussions focused on operational capacity, which practically meant reviewing warehouse infrastructure, logistics, and food safety standards, and on partnerships, hence engaging with local NGOs, authorities, and the private sector that play a role in food’s redistribution. Lastly, future developments were discussed, identifying opportunities for training, resource mobilisation, and alignment with European best practices.

Reflecting on the visit, Sofiia Vara underlined the importance of solidarity within the FEBA network:

“The Moldovan Food Bank has shown resilience and commitment in tackling food waste and hunger. This assessment visit allowed us to listen, exchange experiences, and identify concrete steps to strengthen its activities. FEBA is proud to stand alongside our members in Moldova as part of our shared mission to ensure no good food is wasted and that it reaches those who need it most.”
