As part of FEBA’s ongoing mission to strengthen ties among European food banks, Balázs Cseh has recently visited the Bulgarian Food Bank (BFB) in Sofia.
The visit provided a valuable opportunity to learn more about BFB’s work and impact. Recognized as a widely respected organization in Bulgaria, BFB plays a central role in addressing food insecurity and reducing food waste through partnerships with food producers, retailers, and community groups.
A key recent development has been the resolution of a long-standing legal barrier—food donations in Bulgaria are no longer subject to VAT. This important policy change opens up significant new opportunities for the growth of food donations and for scaling up BFB’s activities nationwide.
During the meeting, the teams explored potential areas for collaboration and future development. One particularly promising direction is the introduction of virtual food banking activities in Bulgaria, which could enhance donation efficiency and better meet the needs of charitable organizations. In this regard, BFB can greatly benefit from the knowledge and experience already gained by other FEBA members who have successfully implemented similar solutions.
FEBA thanks the Bulgarian Food Bank for their warm welcome, professionalism, and inspiring commitment. The Federation looks forward to continued cooperation and to supporting BFB in unlocking its full potential in the years to come.
