Peer-to-Peer sessions on food waste prevention legislation

In order to support and foster the exchange between Food Banks belonging to the FEBA network on the topic of food waste prevention legislation, two Peer-to-Peer sessions have been organised.

On 1 February, representatives from Fédération Française des Banques Alimentaires (FEBA Member in France) and Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus (FBAO, FEBA Member in Italy) discussed the different components of the French law, which the so-called “Garot” law being the most known pillar. The following day, on 2 Feburary, FBAO received input on the Czech law, Food and tobacco products Act Nr. 110/1997 §11, from Česká Federace Potravinových Bank (FEBA Member in Czech Republic).

During the meetings, several topic-related aspects were addressed, among them the particularities of the respective food waste prevention laws, the effectiveness of the implementation, and resulting challenges concerning additional costs for the Food Banks or the food quality. Moreover, positive effects experienced were outlined, i.e. opportunities for public funding attributable to the enforcement of the law.
