Italy has been the first and most impacted country in Europe by the coronavirus pandemic. The Italian Food Banks, under the organization Fondazione Banco Alimentare Onlus, have always remained open since the beginning. As the country starts to slowly go back to normal life again, the economic crisis is hitting hard, putting the Food Banks in a challenging position.
In this period of emergency, Banco Alimentare has distributed more than 90 thousand tons of food to charities. Today only in Italy there are 10 million more people in a condition of poverty. The food demand is increasing and at the same time, coordinating the recovery, storage and delivery of huge quantities of food is a delicate task in this period. Read more here.
This situation of poverty has been confirmed by a recent study carried out by Istat which states that almost one in three Italians is at risk of poverty. More precisely, 6.5% of families are in absolute poverty and the poor are getting poorer and poorer. Read more here.
