25 years of Tafel Deutschland: a worried look into the future

In view of the 25th anniversary of the umbrella organisation of food banks in Germany, Jochen Brühl, Chairman of Tafel Deutschland e.V., is concerned about the development of poverty in Germany and the waste of food and resources.

“Despite good economic development, the poverty rate in Germany has even risen further recently. The goal must not be to manage poverty, but to eradicate it permanently. Unfortunately, we have not seen any progress in the last 25 years,” says Jochen Brühl. According to him, more and more people do not perceive the offer of the Tafel as an additional relief but are rather dependent on it as existential care support.

Food waste is, at twelve million tonnes, also tremendous in Germany. “We are finally noticing an awareness of the issue. But too little is still being done,” says Jochen Brühl.

Politicians must finally face up to these challenges. The association calls on political decision-makers to combat the causes of poverty and food waste in a sustainable manner. In addition, the association is also demanding financial support from politicians for now, in order to be able to continue its important ecological and social function in society.
