FEBA Secretary General, Angela Frigo was invited to join the celebrations for the World Pulses Day on 10 February 2021. On this significant occasion the FAO Liaison Office in New York held a virtual event on the theme “#LovePulses for a healthy diet and planet: Sowing seeds of change”.
This was the 3rd Observance of World Pulses Day, held during an exceptional time when many countries are dealing with the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“On this World Pulses Day, we want to recall that, compared to other crops, pulses already have a low food wastage footprint and therefore they are an environmentally-friendly source of key nutrients. Pulses are also highly water efficient, require minimal processing and no refrigeration, which limits natural resources consumption in the later stages of the food supply chain. Pulses can be stored for many months and sometimes years without spoiling or losing their nutritional value.
All these characteristics do not only reduce food waste along the food supply chain but also food waste generated at household level. For all these reasons pulses are a smart choice for food insecure households. They can play a key role in creating an affordable, sustainable and nutrient secure present and future.”, said Angela Frigo, FEBA Secretary General.
